Checked midi skirts are officially back – and yes, they’re cooler than you remember. Once reserved for school uniforms and preppy throwbacks, the heritage style is getting a fashion-forward refresh this season.
On the AW25 runways, checked midi skirts were everywhere – from COS, where they were styled with sculptural knits and tonal layers, to Burberry, which stayed true to its British heritage by presenting oversized, statement-making checks.
What’s really made the look pop this season, though, is the street-style set. It became nearly impossible to miss during fashion month, as editors and influencers alike styled midi-length skirts in checked fabrics with chunky knit jumpers, sleek leather jackets or oversized blazers.

So, how will we wear it? Our best advice is to let the skirt take centre stage. The easiest and most convincing pairing is a chunky knit – think cable-knit crew necks or brushed cashmere cardigan – tucked or semi-tucked into a checked midi. Finish the look with a pair of knee-high boots and you’ve got a polished, autumn-ready outfit.
If you’re ready to embrace the nostalgic trend, the high street is already stacked with options, from checked skirts at H&M and Next, to that draped midi from COS that was all over our Instagram feeds during fashion month (and is selling fast).
But our favourite take on the trend might be at M&S, where a grey checked midi with a drop waist with ruching to create a flattering shape has caught our attention. And it’s priced at £32, so you can shop the look without breaking the bank.
