Forget basic cotton and crease-prone linen – this summer, crochet is the fabric to be seen in. Banish thoughts of old-fashioned doilies, multi-coloured sofa throws or boho festival attire, as the crochet of 2025 is decidedly modern.
Perforated pieces abounded in Chanel’s romantic Cruise 2026 collection and Keira Knightley recently wore a sheer white two-piece straight from the catwalk at the Biarritz Film Festival.
Thanks to contemporary designs and flattering, wearable silhouettes, crochet isn’t just stylish – it’s also surprisingly anti-ageing. In the right colourways and with artfully placed detailing, this season’s crochet pieces can take years off your look. Whether it’s a statement co-ord or dramatic dress, there’s something for everyone.
Co-ords are loved by the fashion crowd for their endless versatility. The monochrome stripe co-ord from Tu at Sainsbury’s looks luxe but is under £50, below left. The wide cut of the trousers and relaxed fit of the top means it delivers on casual elegance. It would work well over swimwear on holiday or on a hot day at home – just make sure you’re wearing skin-toned underwear.
Those with a beachside escape coming up should add this overshirt from Marks & Spencer to their packing list (£59, top right). Layer over a swimsuit and wear open when poolside, or pair with a camisole and button up for a sleeker silhouette.
But if you feel nervous about the sheer element of crochet dresses, you can still feel covered up. Leem’s version (£195, above left) has an inner slip dress, so the peekaboo holes add playful youthfulness without leaving you feeling over-exposed. It’s perfect for an evening meal abroad. Pair with Chloe-esque wedges and a low-waist belt.
For those looking to dip a toe into the trend, try a maxi dress from 4th & Reckless (£65, far right). The timeless, slip-style dress has been given a fashionable update with crochet cut-outs at the waist. Wear with flat sandals on holiday or swap for heels for date night. Or opt for Essentiel Antwerp’s shirt (£180, top left) with similar low-key crochet detailing. This take on classic tailoring would look just as good styled with a skirt for the office as it would with jeans on the weekend.
Saint + Sofia’s midaxi dress (£99, right) is the perfect throw-on style for any day of the week. The crochet-effect jersey combined with the flattering vertical design will hug your figure in all the right places while ensuring a comfortable fit.
And it might feel bold, but the crochet bandana has been dubbed this summer’s hottest accessory, appearing on Gucci’s AW25 runway. This crochet scarf from ASOS (£10, right) is the perfect poolside accessory.
