It’s at this time of year, when a new fashion season kicks in, that you’re most likely to look in your wardrobe and hate all your clothes. Getting to grips with the new styles can feel overwhelming. So let me break down the high-flyers and the horrors on the streets of London and Paris right now.

THE BIG WINNERS This winter it’s all about…
Texture from fluffy faux fur to buttery soft leather and sumptuous suede. Outerwear in these fabrics will tick every style box, with the added bonus of keeping you warm. Try wearing leather a new way with a barrel-leg trouser or wrap detail skirt. John Lewis, Frame and Cos have some great options. A tactile leather jacket can be worn as a classic cropped biker, a bomber or a blazer. Same goes for suede. Check out Massimo Dutti’s chic versions.
Chunky knits Cosy cable styles are everywhere but if you prefer something more slimline, brushed cashmere or a simple funnel neck will also keep you on trend.
Chocolate brown is the new black and never has the urge to dress head to toe in this rich shade while sipping your pumpkin spice latte been so compelling. Considering a new bag purchase? Brown is the way to go. No longer a supporting neutral, brown bags have become a wardrobe classic in recent seasons. No doubt Pantone’s colour of the year, Mocha Mousse, had some sway in making this shade so ubiquitous; likewise, the heightened interest in earthy-toned, boho-leaning looks following Chemena Kamali’s triumphant takeover at Chloé.
Burgundy Too much brown for you? Burgundy is all over Paris right now on tights, knits and outerwear.
Checks A micro trend on coats, skirts and shirts, they’re a fun way to give outfits an autumnal edge.

THE ABSOLUTE HORRORS I’d steer clear of…
Dresses over jeans Lace slips layered over trousers was a big street-style trend during fashion month. In my opinion there’s no way to wear this without looking downright messy. It might work for a 20-something but it screams ‘bag lady’ for anyone over 40.
Double denim Actress Laura Dern wore a light blue denim blazer and matching jeans to Paris Fashion Week, but double denim is tricky to pull off – and it’s not for me. If you are tempted, go for a dark coloured combination so you don’t look like a dated rodeo star.

RETRO COOL
Get your pop of on-trend burgundy with these Japan Decon W trainers from Adidas Originals, which pay tribute to the brand’s iconic 1960s style.
ROLL OUT THE BARREL
These chocolate leather barrel-leg trousers with saddle detail score extra brownie points.
SPOTTED
This is one look I certainly do want to replicate. Actress Julianne Moore arrived in Milan for the Bottega Veneta S/S 26 fashion show wearing the label’s warm brown leather jacket and carrying its newly relaunched Campana shoulder bag. Divine!
