The Bear had an unsuccessful night at the 2025 Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 14.

The FX series’ third season was nominated six times at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, with opportunities to win Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Jeremy Allen White, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Ayo Edebiri, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Liza Colón-Zayas. Edebiri, 29, also earned a nod in the Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series category for the episode “Napkins.”

Following Sunday’s ceremony, The Bear walked away with zero trophies, with The Studio and Hacks taking the majority of comedy awards.

The Bear also had a lackluster showing at the 2025 Creative Arts Emmys earlier this month.

The Bear previously swept the 2023 Primetime Emmys on the comedy side, winning six awards. Another four trophies were collected in 2024, but some viewers continue to question whether the show is a true comedy.

“I think the show is true to life. Sometimes it’s funny, and sometimes it’s real. What we try to do is tell a real story,” executive producer Josh Senior told Deadline last year, explaining that the show’s half-hour episodes make it eligible for the comedy categories.

He added, “What we want to do is tell the truth and make people feel things. If they’re laughing or crying … we can’t control what happens after that.”

While White, who stars as Carmy, gave the outlet a firm “yes!” about The Bear’s comedy chops, Moss-Bachrach, who plays Richie (a.k.a. Cousin), pushed back against the “outdated” genre classification.

“We’re all just trying to reflect the mess of being human, which is deeply hilarious and we’re all suffering,” he told Deadline.

The show’s third season premiered in June 2024 and was met with mixed reviews from fans, some of whom were left unimpressed by how the plot developed. Season 4 debuted this summer and ended with Carmy deciding to leave the restaurant he opened with Sydney (Edebiri), who he elected to take over in his place.

Despite seemingly setting up a series finale with the end of its fourth season, The Bear was renewed for season 5 in July.
