My Best Friend’s Wedding is finally getting a sequel nearly 30 years after the classic rom-com’s 1997 release.
Variety reported in July 2025 that Sony Pictures hired Oscar-nominated Past Lives filmmaker Celine Song to write a screenplay for the long-awaited sequel. Julia Roberts starred in the hit rom-com as a food critic Julianne, a.k.a. Jules, who tries to win over her love interest and best friend, Michael (Dermot Mulroney) — with a little help from pal George (Rupert Everett) — before he marries wealthy fiancée Kimmy (Cameron Diaz) in a lavish Chicago wedding.
Mulroney reignited chatter about the project during a July 2025 interview with the New York Post, where he initially claimed he knew “nothing” about My Best Friend’s Wedding 2. However, the actor later clarified that he had actually heard “lawyers were talking” about the possibility of putting the film together.
It’s surprising that it has taken almost 30 years for My Best Friend’s Wedding to get a proper sequel since the original film made a staggering $299 million at the box office. My Best Friend’s Wedding was received warmly by critics too, in addition to earning an Oscar nod for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score as well as three Golden Globe nominations for the cast.

Julia Roberts’ Pitch
My Best Friend’s Wedding’s leading lady shared her pitch for the sequel two years before it was officially announced. During a December 2023 appearance on CBS Mornings, Roberts was asked where the characters would be today.
“[Michael] is married and faithful to his wife [Kimmy],” Roberts insisted. “George and Julianne start[ed] a do-it-yourself show on HGTV and become wildly famous.”
Mulroney later told Entertainment Tonight that he was delighted by Roberts’ sequel pitch and was hopeful that they’d get a chance to eventually make it a reality.

“I was amazed to hear her kind compliments this weekend,” he said in June 2023. “You know I would love to work with her any day of the week, month or year.”
He added, “If they put that story together, I’m there for sure!’
There’s no telling yet whether screenwriter Song will have an entirely different take on where the My Best Friend’s Weddingcharacters ended up. No cast deals have been announced at this stage.

My Best Friend’s Wedding fans have been waiting a long time for a sequel, so the general reaction to the July 2025 update was pure joy.
“The rom-com era is BACK. Julia Roberts, we’re ready,” one X user wrote, while another added: “In preparation of my best friend’s wedding 2 I’ll be watching 1 and crying my eyes out in the process.”
A third fan declared, “They’re doing a sequel to My Best Friend’s Wedding omgggg!”
Others felt that My Best Friend’s Wedding 2 was emblematic of an unwanted Hollywood sequel trend, with one X user arguing: “Just my two cents, The Devil Wears Prada 2, Happy Gilmore 2, and now I’m seeing My Best Friend’s Wedding 2. Movies made over 20 years ago or more. And Hollywood can’t figure out why Sinners was so good & made lots of money, BECAUSE IT WAS AN ORIGINAL IDEA!! What a concept!”
Another X user insisted: “there is absolutely no need for a my best friend’s wedding sequel. it makes no sense. it is not needed.”
The sequel announcement faced more criticism via Reddit, though one fan pointed out that it was a mistake to judge the project at this early stage.
“Friendly reminder to the angered youths in these comments, Martin Scorsese made The Color of Money 40 years ago and it’s good,” the Reddit commenter posted. “Let it play out before you freak out about stuff. Yall literally just enjoyed Top Gun Maverick like 3 years ago.”

Since fans have spent nearly three decades thinking up ideas for My Best Friend’s Wedding 2, they’ve now started sharing some of their most unexpected plot suggestions.
“Julia Roberts better end up with Rupert Everett in this one or I’m throwing hands,” someone demanded via X.
Over on Reddit, commenters offered some darker options for the sequel’s title: My Best Friend’s Divorce or My Best Friend’s Funeral. There was also overwhelming demand for Everett to return as Jule’s quick-witted and effortlessly chic bestie George.

“Better be two hours of George getting all the plaudits and happiness he deserves,” a tongue-in-cheek comment read.
There was even a reference to a long-held fan theory that My Best Friend’s Wedding’s true love story was between Jules and Kimmy, with one Redditor insisting: “Julianne x Kimmy better be official or I’m not watching.”
