Mariah Miller, 29, from Tennessee, and her best friend Joy noticed their daughters Belle, 10 months, and Elsie, seven months, look extremely alike.
So they decided to switch them and see how long it would take Mariah’s partner, Alex, 34, to notice.
During a recent barbecue, Mariah handed Joy’s daughter, Elsie, to Alex pretending that it was their own daughter.
And despite looking at her face multiple times, fixing her hair, and giving her a kiss, Alex did not realize that the baby he was holding was not his own offspring.
It wasn’t until Mariah brought their actual daughter out that he made the realization that he had been playing with an entirely different child the whole time.
Suddenly, Alex’s face went from smiling to stunned as her did a double take at the baby he was holding.
‘That’s not mine,’ he said as everyone erupted in laughter. ‘Who are you, kid? I’m a dirt bag father.’

After Mariah shared a video of the ordeal to TikTok it quickly went viral, raking in more than 10.8 million views and sparking a fierce debate about how well parents should know their kids.
Many slammed Alex and claimed he had ‘failed’ as a parent, while some said they’d be ‘ashamed’ if they were married to him.
‘I’m embarrassed for him,’ wrote one user in the comment section.
‘This concerns me,’ added another, while a third insisted, ‘I would notice my baby just by her weight alone.’
‘I’m not judging them but there’s absolutely no way. My husband could be shown just a foot and pick which ones ours,’ a fourth comment read.
A fifth said,’If you can’t recognize your own baby, you failed.’
‘Dude… a parent knows their baby. There is zero chance my parents wouldn’t have immediately recognized they weren’t holding me,’ scathed someone else.
‘That’s not even a newborn, she looks almost a year old. That’s 300+ days of looking at that baby’s face every single day multiple times a day, they should have every inch memorized.’

‘I’d actually go insane if my husband failed this bad,’ announced a different user.
‘”Babies look alike” is a bad argument when one of those babies is YOUR kid. This wouldn’t happen to me and id be ashamed if it happened to my husband,’ wrote one person.
‘When it’s your baby you know what your baby looks like,’ vowed someone else.
Some users, however, came to Alex’s defense and pointed out that Belle and Elsie do indeed have a lot of similarities.
‘In all fairness he was distracted and they do look a lot alike,’ one defender wrote.
‘In his mind he had no reason not to believe this isn’t his kid so he was probably like “oh she looks slightly different today,”‘ theorized another.
‘This!!! People are being a little intense lol he was cooking and entertaining people,’ replied someone else.

‘Okay in fairness they do look very alike. And at least he realized once he actually saw his daughter,’ said another person.
While chatting withNewsweek about it, Mariah explained, ‘We always joked that our babies were twins, and my husband [Alex] hadn’t met Elsie yet.
‘So when they arrived, and my husband wasn’t home, we all had the idea to swap babies.’
Mariah told the publication she was not surprised or disappointed with Alex’s response during the test.
‘Honestly, I figured it would take him a while to notice,’ she added. ‘I knew he was pretty overwhelmed and preoccupied.’
