The I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel took some shocking twists and turns, some of which even surprised star Madelyn Cline.

Warning: spoilers ahead!

Cline, 27, opened up about the surprising return of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Helen Shivers and how the cameo required her to come back to set to film more scenes.

“I only got the news that I was coming back about two and a half weeks ago. We shot all those very, very end scenes about two weeks ago,” Cline told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published on Monday, July 21.

In the movie, Gellar, 48, returned in a brief cameo, featuring a dream sequence with Helen and Cline’s breakout character, Danica Richards. Helen died in the first I Know What You Did Last Summer film in 1997, and Gellar and her costars had repeatedly said she was not going to be in the sequel.

“I did not know that [dream sequence with Gellar] was happening,” Cline continued. “Jenn [Kaytin Robinson] texted me that we were going to do it. And I was absolutely floored. Gobsmacked. She then sent me the sides and was like, ‘What do you think?’ And I said, ‘I absolutely love them, but whatever. The fact that we’re doing this, write whatever you want. I’m in. I will do whatever you want.’”

Cline particularly enjoyed working with scream queen Gellar, recalling the experience as one of the most “iconic days” of her life.

“I just felt like everything conspired for us to have that in the script,” the Outer Banks actress said. “It only felt right for Danica to meet and face Helen. It’s just so special to have that stamp of approval and to be ushered in as a next generation by Sarah Michelle. [She] is, and has always been, a force.”

Gellar’s husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., reprised his role of Ray Bronson in the sequel, a return nearly 30 years in the making. It was Kaytin Robinson who got him on board to do the film with all of the “cool secrets” she hoped to include in the plot.

“It was awesome. I signed on before there was a script. I knew it was gonna be good,” Prinze Jr., 49, revealed during a Monday episode of The Morning Mash Up on SiriusXM’s Hits 1.

He continued, “To make a studio movie in the modern age and to maintain your vision from beginning to finish is borderline impossible and for her to pull off what she pulled off was just, made me very proud to get to be a part of it.”
