It started with that Totême scarf coat. You know: the black one with white fringing that literally every influencer and fashion editor was wearing non-stop last year?
Suddenly, a coat wasn’t enough. Anyone interested in fashion needed a matching scarf, sewn in, swept chicly over their shoulder, as if they spent their weeks going back and forth between the streets of Stockholm and various Fashion Week front rows.
Now, the scarf-coat has gone fully mainstream – and our wardrobes (and bank accounts) couldn’t be happier. The high street’s done is usual, ahem, reimagining, offering chic, cocooning options that look infinitely more expensive than they are. And this means no more desperately rummaging around in our packed work tote for a grubby old scarf our mum gifted us five years ago. Hoorah.

It’s incredibly easy to style: over a roll-neck and wide-leg trousers for the office, or with denim and trainers for a Saturday Pret run. The beauty of the built-in scarf is that it makes even the most thrown-on outfit look like it’s been fully considered – and never clashes, given the whole fastened-together/same-material element.
