As a denim-obsessed fashion editor, it would take a lot to convince me to add anything other thanjeans into my day-to-day outfit rotation. Black trousers make me feel like a waiter, chinos feel too preppy and cords seem to add bulk in all the wrong places.
So, you bet I was surprised when I started spotting brown trousers all over the Instagram feeds of some of my favourite tastemakers… and realised I actually quite liked them!
Not just any brown trousers, the look this season involves perfectly tailored, suiting-inspired styles in shades of chocolate and caramel. While still neutral enough to match with lots of items in your wardrobe, brown is a great alternative to black because it’s a warmer hue and comes in a whole spectrum of shades, meaning there is a flattering option for all skin tones.
Of course, brown as a trend isn’t anything unusual this time of year. From M&S‘s sold out suede loafers to the viral DeMellier New York bag, the cosy shade pops up in the collections of some of our favourite brands autumn after autumn.
But how to wear the brown trouser trend? Some of the best styling was spotted at Brunello Cucinelli AW25, where models wore theirs extra wide, with crisp white shirts and belted jackets to balance out proportions. Alternatively, embrace a more classic look like the models at Max Mara who wore suiting styles alongside matching waistcoats and blazers.
My favourite (and the simplest!) way to style them, however, is by chanelling an ultra-cosy aesthetic and pairing them with chunky knits in tonal shades of brown and beige. Add a scarf in a matching colourway to tie the autumnal look together. For wide leg styles add a pointed shoe to keep it feeling chic rather than frumpy.
