What can you depend on John Lewis for? Bed linen, babygrows and white goods. But how about clothing with a designer edge?
Until recently, the answer to this question was definitely ‘no’. But I would now say it’s one of the coolest brands on the British High Street.
This is, in part, thanks to recent partnerships with luminary brands such as Mulberry, Vivienne Westwood and A.W.A.K.E. Mode.
There’s no denying that these have transformed the store’s fashion credentials, and its latest collaboration might just be the best yet. Today is the launch of a 34-piece collection by acclaimed London- based designer Rejina Pyo.
I (along with a lot of other fashion editors) have been waiting with bated breath for it to drop online and in five selected stores.
Pyo describes the collaboration as ‘modern, confident and effortlessly wearable’ – and she’s not wrong.
Each piece has her unmistakable touch, with sculptural tailoring, softly structured knitwear and wide-legged denim, all in a palette perfect for autumn.
‘This collection is a celebration of individuality, timeless elegance, and the bringing together of British heritage and Korean modernity,’ Pyo says.
We were offered an exclusive sneak peek at the collection, pictured above – and have highlighted the must-have pieces you need to snap up before they sell out…
The slingback heels, £139
These slingbacks are spot on. The green satin and jazzy buckle details leave them looking pretty fancy, but they work with everything – jeans, trousers and dresses.
They’re also comfortable enough to actually wear. I’ll be dressing up denim with these now and wearing them on repeat come party season.
The indigo jeans, £129
This season your jeans must be dark-wash and wide-leg – these fit the bill exactly: high-waisted, long in the leg (they look great with heels) and cut from stiff-enough denim to hold their shape.
If you’re on the shorter side, turn them up; there’s nothing cooler than an exaggerated turn-up on dark indigo jeans.
The shoulder bag, £169
Shoulder bags are the shape of the season, and Rejina’s version for John Lewis is right up there with the best designer offerings. It’s smart enough for every day and elevated enough to feel special.
In a deep burgundy (the colour of the season) leather with gleaming hardware and a neat fold-over top, it looks far more expensive than it is.
The long-line coat, £269
There are plenty of coats calling themselves ‘long-line’ this season, but this one actually is.
Full-length, straight-cut and made from a heavy wool that feels like a proper winter coat, you’ll be wearing this for many years to come.
The charcoal colour will work with your existing wardrobe, and the back-button detail means you can wear it open for a looser shape.
It’s expensive, but if you consider its cost-per-wear potential, it’s manageable.
The pleated skirt, £149
If you’re still struggling to accept that a school uniform staple is now the height of fashion, Rejina’s version may persuade you.
This skirt feels grown-up and wearable, with crisp pleats, a flattering length and fashionable brown shade – very Prada, without the price tag.
It comes with a matching blazer if you’re partial to a co-ord. I’ll be wearing mine with trainers and an oversized knit.
The detailed jumper, £169
I’ve got a wardrobe full of decent-enough knitwear – plain colours, standard shapes – but nothing special.
This jumper changes that. It’s warm, well-cut and finished with subtle stitch details that make it feel special without being fussy. It’s still practical and wearable, just significantly cooler.
